Over the <\/span>past<\/span> couple of <\/span>years<\/span> we <\/span>have been <\/span>leafing through the Brambly Hedge archives and working with the City of London Corporation to <\/span>find out more about Jill Barklem\u2019s <\/span>love of <\/span>Epping Forest<\/span>. <\/span>Epping Forest is a vital green corridor that<\/span> stretches <\/span>from<\/span> the<\/span> rural <\/span>Essex <\/span>countryside right into urban London. It\u2019s a place Jill spent a lot of time sketching and taking photos, many of which were used as inspiration for the Brambly Hedge books. <\/span>A couple of years ago we matched up notes, sketches, and photos from the archive to<\/span> confirm that we had rediscovered<\/span> a very special tree, <\/span>the original <\/span>H<\/span>ornbeam <\/span>t<\/span>ree that Jill used<\/span> to create the home of the Toadflax family<\/span> in her illustrations. In April 2026 we went back to Epping Forest <\/span>for another <\/span>successful<\/span> discovery\u2026 <\/span>Crabapple<\/span> Cottage! <\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>Crabapple<\/span> tree is h<\/span>ome to Mr and Mrs <\/span>A<\/span>pple and <\/span>is <\/span>one of Jill\u2019s most recognisable illustrations<\/span>;<\/span> the cross-section of <\/span>Crabapple<\/span> Cottage in full blossom<\/span> from Spring Story. We once again used photos, notes, and sketches from the archive to track the tree down, which is only a short distance from Jill\u2019s home at the time<\/span> she was creating Spring Story<\/span>. The tree is over 300 years old and <\/span>still thriving as it <\/span>was in full blossom in early April this year. <\/span><\/p>\n

For those who want to find out more about <\/span>Crabapple<\/span> Cottage and Jill\u2019s research for Brambly Hedge, there is<\/span> currently <\/span>a display in the Epping Forest Visitor Centre at Chingford that will<\/span>be in place until September 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

From northeast of <\/span>London<\/span> we head across the city, where p<\/span>reparations are in full swing for the <\/span>2026 RHS Chelsea Flower <\/span>S<\/span>how<\/span><\/a>, one of the most celebrated horticultural events of the year<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Jill Barklem was fascinated by botany and the natural world, she became an expert on <\/span>wild flowers<\/span> and spent many hours<\/span> photographing <\/span>every petal <\/span>and<\/span> illustrating every minute detail in her sketchbooks, much of this research came to fruition on the pages of her Brambly Hedge books. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

She would visit the RHS Chelsea Flower show whenever she could, it was one the highlights of <\/span>her<\/span> year, and if she couldn\u2019t make it in <\/span>person<\/span> she would be glued to the BBC watching <\/span>every episode. It\u2019s one of the many reasons that May was her favourite month<\/span> of the year<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly<\/span>, s<\/span>he would always prefer the show gardens that looked as though they had been plucked straight from the natural landscape in which they belong. For her that would always be the natural wonder of the hedgerow. <\/span><\/p>\n

On this theme<\/span>,<\/span> we<\/span> arrive at the 2026 Show where we have teamed up <\/span>with<\/span> the incredibly talented<\/span> Mille Richardson<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Stokesay <\/span>F<\/span>lowers<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>bring <\/span>Jill\u2019s <\/span>hedgerow to the Chelsea Flower Show. \u00a0<\/span>\u2018A visit to Brambly Hedge\u2019<\/span> will <\/span>adorn the Bull Ring <\/span>g<\/span>ate <\/span>entrance to the show<\/span>, which is located<\/span> on the <\/span>r<\/span>iver Thames <\/span>e<\/span>mbankment<\/span> in Chelsea<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The installation <\/span>highlights the importance of our hedgerows to biodiversity within our landscape in the UK and beyond. Since the 1940s the UK has lost nearly 50% of its hedge<\/span>rows, a vital habitat for many species. <\/span><\/p>\n

The installation <\/span>also <\/span>pays homage to Jill<\/span> as both a storyteller and an artist<\/span>. I<\/span>t will flow across the gate in a journey from<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>pring<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ummer<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span> an abundance of fresh, seasonal, British-grown flowers <\/span>from<\/span> Stokesay\u2019s <\/span>traditional walled garden<\/span> in <\/span>south <\/span>Shropshire. The <\/span>wild <\/span>hedgerow foliage that intertwines the installation will be from the Badminton estate in Gloucestershire. <\/span><\/p>\n

Violets, cowslips and forget-me-nots emerge from the hedgerow, evoking the warm days when the mice step out to welcome spring. As summer unfolds, honeysuckle and wild roses, including rambler Rosa \u2018Fran\u00e7ois Juranville\u2019 and English garden rose \u2018Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019, fill the air with sweetness, and thoughts turn to a very special occasion<\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Head <\/span>through<\/span> the Bull Ring gate into the Great Pavillion where you will find a further installation celebrating Poppy and Dusty\u2019s wedding<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n

There will also be a Brambly Hedge <\/span>window installation on display at Waterstones bookshop on the King\u2019s Road<\/span>. They will have plenty of stock of our latest books including <\/span>A Visit to Brambly Hedge<\/span><\/a> and our new <\/span>b<\/span>oard <\/span>b<\/span>ooks<\/span> House for a Mouse<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Nice <\/span>For<\/span> Mice<\/span><\/a>, as well as lots of items from our station<\/span>e<\/span>ry and homeware range. <\/span><\/p>\n

Following the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, we can now announce that we will also be attending the first ever RHS Badminton Flower Show, from the 8<\/span>th<\/span> to the <\/span>12<\/span>th<\/span> July 2026. As mentioned, some of the foliage used in the Bull Ring Gate installation c<\/span>omes<\/span> from the Badminton estate, so it seems fitting that we head back to the Gloucestershire to continue our horticultural celebration into the summer. \u00a0<\/span>We wanted to make sure that our installations are <\/span>as <\/span>sustainable as possible, therefore many<\/span> of <\/span>the <\/span>plants and trees used <\/span>at<\/span> the Chelsea Flower Show will be reused <\/span>to create <\/span>new installations for the RHS Badminton <\/span>S<\/span>how<\/span>, and<\/span> will then go on t<\/span>o<\/span> find permanent homes after the summer 2026 RHS shows. <\/span><\/p>\n

We will be working with Millie Richardson Flowers to decorate the RHS letters at the Badminton Show, where there will also be a children\u2019s activity area and a Brambly Hedge shop.<\/span><\/p>\n
